I have to admit that I don’t own a lot of wide leg pants. That’s probably because I feel they can sometimes be a bit hard to pull off. It can also be a little tricky finding the right fit for your shape.
Despite these minor challenges though, a wide leg pant can prove to not only be a heck of a lot more comfortable than those skinny pants but can also look very chic and stylish too!
Below are some tips on how to wear wide leg pants with confidence.
Tips On How to Wear Wide Leg Pants:
Choose the right length: I find the longer styles can be very leg lengthening! I think it’s much harder to pull off the look of wider or flared leg pants when they are crops. The shorter lengths work for women who have longer legs and and/or are on the thinner side. For the average and plus size woman, I think the longer style works so much easier. How long? I think it’s best when the pant leg hides your heels which brings me to my next tip.
Wear the right shoe: Not always the case, but sometimes wider leg pants run long. If you’re under about 5’5″ you may even have to have them hemmed. If you want to avoid that, try wearing them with a high heel or boot. That way you’re not dragging the bottoms and it will elongate your look. I prefer a high heel any day over flats with wide leg pants. (An exception would be a very summery, linen style wide leg beach pant that looks gorgeous with sandals. This very casual pair is also so cute with tennies)
Wear a more fitted style top or sweater: To balance the look, wear a tucked in blouse or a thinner fabric shirt or sweater. Doing so helps give you a clean, classic look. If your top is too big or bulky you run the risk of looking like you’re drowning in fabric. It will give you a less put together; an almost sloppy look and we don’t want that.
Accessorize: Along with the more fitted tops, a belt is a great way to accentuate your waistline when wearing wide leg pants. I also love an oversized shoulder bag to give you a very chic and put together silhouette.
Look for wide leg pants in neutral colors: You’ll feel a lot more confident if you’re new to a wide leg pants by finding a neutral color pair. My favorite color choices would be black, beige and navy! These colors options will give you a nice classic look. While bold and bright can be preyty, it’s harder to pull off and you can run the risk of looking sort of well, clownish for a lack of a better description.
Avoid big pockets and bulky material: Big pockets can bulk up the look and you don’t want that. I try to find wide leg pants that are thinner material, preferably no zippers, and no pockets. The thinner material makes the pant move nicely as you walk giving it a more “flowy” look and feeling.
