Hair After Fifty – Four Styling Steps To Keep It Looking And Feeling Healthy

Alright ladies, it’s time to talk hair!  In the last year and a half I’ve been in a real hair funk!  It started in the spring of 2020 right as the shutdown started happening.

Everyone at that time was struggling because they couldn’t get in for a cut, color or style as salons were all closed.  My bigger problem also involved losing my ride or die stylist at that time.

 (She got out of the business to pursue managing a spa and to give her shoulder and neck a break from working so many years doing hair)

When things started to open, I was courting other stylists which is always difficult but even more difficult was noticing stark changes in my hair.  While I have fine, straight hair, I’ve always had what’s described by my stylists as a “ton” of it.  This change didn’t happen overnight as it’s hard to know it’s happening until it gets to the point it’s painfully obvious.  My hair was breaking and thinning. It was also more unmanageable – just harder to get it go the way I was used to it going.

The hair around my forehead that was always the same length as my bob, broke to about only an inch or less long!  Talk about difficult to manage!

 So what happened?  Truthfully, your guess is as good as mine!  Was it over processed from bleaching, did hormonal changes cause it, was it stress (I have plenty of that) or was it a combination of all the above?  The “experts” think all the above.

 I should also add I’ve noticed more of those pesky grey hairs.  The texture can be more wirey (yes that is a word -lol) Wirey hairs are hard to tame.  They are far more obvious too when your hair is so straight like mine.

So those are the problems –  now how did I solve them and happily embrace my hair?

I’ve found a few tricks I want share some tricks that have been working well for me and I think it could help you too – especially if you’ve noticed the changes due to greying and menopause.

Keep reading for 4 of my go to tips to aid in improved, healthy looking hair!

Step One:

Start with a quality shampoo and conditioner!  While swinging into Target recently, I discovered Hair Biology’s NEW Vivid & Protected Collection formulated for women aged 45+ who are noticing changes in their hair.

Step Two:

If you can, let your hair dry about 50% before blow drying.  Heat is not your hair’s friend.  Minimizing the amount of time you spend drying will greatly help the overall health of your hair.

Step Three:

Take time to deep condition at least once a week.  I’ve been using the Hair Biology Color Brilliance Sealing Mask.

 While it says to keep on only 2 minutes, I like to actually get out of the shower and towel dry my hair.  (That way, I feel the product can absorb better than when your strands are holding all that water).  After applying, I put on a disposable conditioning cap (I like these) and then a heated conditioning cap (I use this one)

Step Four:

Velcro Rollers:  This is my go to hack for creating lasting body and fullness now that I’ve noticed my hair is less dense and more limp.

After styling my hair (I either round brush it or use this styling brush) I take varying sizes of large velcro rollers like these here – I just roll my hair up at the root and then give them all a good spritzing of strong hold hair spray.

 I usually go do my make up and leave them in anywhere from 10-20 minutes and voila – instant fullness and body!

See the added volume?!  I love the look and feel of that extra “poof” and the rollers help prevent that flat, lifeless look.
